Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 2 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove intake manifold.
2. Remove rocker arm cover.
3. Remove A/C compressor, if necessary.
4. If removing LH cylinder head, disconnect power steering pump bracket from LH cylinder head. Position pump clear of area. Disconnect oil lever indicator tube from exhaust manifold stud.
5. Remove thermactor crossover tube from rear of cylinder heads.
6. If removing RH cylinder head, remove alternator mounting bracket from cylinder head.
7. Remove fuel line clip at front of RH cylinder head.
8. Disconnect exhaust manifold from muffler intake pipe.
9. Loosen rocker arm stud nuts or bolts so that rocker arms can be rotated to the side.
10. Remove pushrods, keeping them in sequence so they may be installed in original locations. Remove exhaust valve stem caps.
11. Loosen cylinder head bolts and lift head off of block. If required, remove exhaust manifolds to gain access to lower attaching bolts. Remove and discard head gasket.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On 5.0L/V8-302 engines, slightly tighten cylinder head bolts in a series of two steps in sequence shown in Fig. 2. Torque first step to 55-65 ft. lbs., then torque all cylinder head bolts again in sequence to 65-72 ft. lbs.
b. On 5.8L/V8-351 engines, slightly tighten cylinder head bolts in a series of two steps in sequence shown in Fig. 2. Torque first step to 95-105 ft. lbs., then torque all cylinder head bolts again in sequence to 105-112 ft. lbs.
c. When cylinder head bolts have been tightened following the above step, it is not necessary to retighten bolts after extended operation. Bolts may be checked and retightened, if desired.
d. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent, to both ends of push rods and valve stem tips. Install push rods in original positions.
e. Install rocker arms and check valve clearance.
f. Tighten all components to specifications.
