Timing Cover: Service and Repair
1. Refer to WATER PUMP and perform all steps except removal of water pump. Leave water pump attached to front cover.2. Drain oil crankcase, then remove crankshaft pulley from crankshaft vibration damper.
3. Remove damper attaching capscrew and washer. Install crankshaft damper removal tool No. T58P-6316-D or equivalent, on crankshaft vibration damper. Remove vibration damper.
4. Remove oil pan to front cover attaching bolts.
5. Carefully separate front cover from oil pan gasket.
6. Remove front cover and water pump as an assembly.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Use care when installing cover to avoid seal damage or possible gasket mis-location.
b. It may be necessary to force cover downward to slightly compress pan gasket. This can be accomplished by using front cover alignment tool No. T61P-6019-B or equivalent, at front cover attaching hole locations.
c. Coat threads of attaching screws with oil resistant pipe sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent, and install screws. While pushing in on alignment tool, tighten oil pan to cover attaching screws to specifications.
d. Tighten cover to block attaching screws to specifications, then remove pilot.
e. Apply multi-purpose grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent, to oil seal rubbing surface of vibration damper inner hub to prevent damage to seal. Apply silicone gasket and sealant E3AZ-19562-A or equivalent, to keyway before installing on crankshaft.
f. Align crankshaft vibration damper keyway with key on crankshaft. Install vibration damper on crankshaft using crankshaft sprocket and damper replacement tool No. T52L-6306-AEE or equivalent. Install capscrew and washer and tighten to specifications. Install crankshaft pulley.
g. Fill and bleed cooling system, then adjust ignition timing.
