Removal/Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering shaft weather boot to dash panel attaching bolts.
3. Remove intermediate shaft to steering column shaft attaching bolts.
4. Move weather boot aside, then remove steering gear input shaft pinch bolt and remove intermediate shaft.
5. Raise and support vehicle.
6. Remove left front wheel and heat shield.
7. Remove bundling strap retaining lines to gear.
8. Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
9. Place suitable drain pan under steering gear, then remove pressure and return lines from gear and allow to drain into pan.
10. Remove nuts from gear mounting bolts. The gear mounting bolts are pressed into the steering gear housing and should not be removed during normal service procedures.
11. Push weather boot end into vehicle and lift steering gear out of mounting holes. Rotate gear as necessary so input shaft passes between brake booster and floorpan. Carefully start working steering gear out through left front fender apron opening.
12. Rotate input shaft as necessary so it clears left front fender apron opening and remove steering gear from vehicle.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installing hydraulic hoses, install new plastic seals on fittings.
b. Torque steering gear attaching nuts to specification.
c. Torque hydraulic pressure hose and hydraulic return hose fittings to specifications. When hydraulic fittings are properly installed, the hoses are free to swivel.
d. Fill power steering system with automatic transmission fluid type F.
e. Set toe-in to specifications.
