ISSUE:
Beginning in May, 1995, all AX4S and AX4N transaxles are equipped with a new "Grob"-type spline in the drive joint between the overdrive drum assembly and the front sun and shell assembly (Figure 1). This new "Grob-type spline replaces the castellated lug-type drive joint (Figure 2) on all AXOD, AXODE and AX4S NON-SHO transaxles and the original "Grob"-type spline joint on the AX4S SHO and all AX4N transaxles.
ACTION:
If a castellated lug drive joint overdrive drum, front sun and shell assembly and/or direct one-way clutch inner race and plate assembly is being replaced by a "Grob"-type drive joint, the mating parts must also be replaced as a set.
All three (3) mating parts are available as a past model service set for the AXOD, AXODE, and AX4S transaxles (except Taurus SHO). Refer to the following text and Application Chart for details.
1993-95 3.2L TAURUS SHO WITH AX4S TRANSAXLE AND 1994-95 3.0L TAURUS/SABLE AND 1995 CONTINENTAL WITH AX4N TRANSAXLE
These transaxles have always contained a "Grob" drive joint between the overdrive drum, front sun and shell assembly, and the direct one-way clutch inner race and plate assembly. The original "Grob-type design is similar to the new "Grob" design implemented in May, 1995, however, the "Grob" drive joint splines are a sightly different size and a different part number.
This revised "Grob" design is not interchangeable with the previous "Grob" design. If an original design "Grob" drive joint overdrive drum, front sun and shell assembly, and direct one-way clutch inner race and plate assembly is replaced with a new "Grob" drive joint, the mating parts must also be replaced as a set. Additionally, a new large chamfer direct clutch pressure plate must also be installed in the direct clutch with the large inner diameter chamfer (up) facing the direct one-way clutch plate to ensure proper clearance (Figure 3). All three (3) mating parts and the direct clutch pressure plate (with large chamfer) are available in a past model service set for the AX4S Taurus SHO and all AX4N transaxles.
