FORD:
1991-93 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-93 SABLE

ISSUE:
A "clunking" noise may be heard when accelerating. This noise may be caused by a loose or missing No. 2 (right front) engine mount upper attaching bolt.

ACTION:
Replace the No. 2 (right front) and No. 3 (right rear) engine mounts. A new improved design upper attachment bolt must be used to secure the No. 2 engine mount (note special procedure for tightening this fastener). Refer to the following procedure and to the appropriate Taurus/Sable Service Manual for service details.

1. For complaints of "clunking" noise coming from the engine compartment:

a. Inspect for loose or missing right front (No. 2) engine mount upper attaching bolt (to A/C bracket).

b. Inspect right front (No. 2) engine mount rubber section for tears and fluid leak-out.

c. Inspect right rear (No. 3) engine mount rubber section for tears and fluid leak-out.

2. For any of the three noted concerns, replace the right front and right rear engine mounts and the right front upper attachment bolt.

a. Refer to the appropriate Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 02-03 for engine mount removal and installation procedures.

b. A new bolt (F3DZ-6047-A) MUST be used to attach the right front engine mount upper bracket to the A/C bracket, Figure 1.

c. Tighten the new bolt/washer assembly to 115 lb.ft. (156 N-m), using a non-ratcheting torque wrench.

NOTE:
BECAUSE OF THE "STEPPED" DESIGN OF THE NEW BOLT, TORQUE WILL RISE IN A "STEPPING" PATTERN, FIGURE 2. INCREASE TORQUE TO 115 LB.FT. (156 N-m), AND STOP. IF TORQUE THEN FALLS OFF DUE TO THE BOLT RECEDING INTO A STEP, TIGHTEN UNTIL 115 LB.FT. (156 N-m) TORQUE IS ACHIEVED, BEING CAREFUL THAT THE TORQUE FALL-OFF CONDITION DOES NOT RECUR. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO SLIGHTLY EXCEED SPECIFIED TORQUE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE CORRECT CLAMP LOADING AFTER TIGHTENING FORCE IS RELEASED.
