External Leaks

When trying to detect a fluid leakage condition, use the following procedure to pinpoint the exact cause and location of the problem:
1. Check for an overfilled power steering pump reservoir.
2. Wipe suspected area dry.
3. Check for power steering pump overflow and aeration.
4. Check for exact source of oil leakage. For example; oil may be running down from another area and drip may not be leak point.
5. Some leaks may be high pressure leaks and may require holding the steering wheel against stops to seep out. Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than three to five seconds at a time. Cycle the steering wheel from stop to stop 10 times and check for leaks. The bellows may have to removed from the housing to observe the leak.
6. Power steering leaks that cannot be serviced by tightening, must be replaced.
