TRANSAXLE - AXODE - INSUFFICIENT LUBE - OIL PUMP BLOCKED WITH GASKET MATERIAL - VEHICLES BUILT IN 1991 OR BEFORE JANUARY 2, 1992
FORD:
1991-92 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-92 CONTINENTAL, SABLE
ISSUE:
Planetary gear wear or failure may be caused by a piece of oil pump gasket separating in the area which is not supported by the pump body. The gasket particle could lodge in the rear lube circuit causing insufficient lubrication of the transmission.
ACTION:
The oil pump gasket has been revised to remove the gasket area which was not supported. Refer to the following procedure for proper gasket identification.
The service part number was not changed on the new gasket. When replacing the oil pump gasket the technician must verify that the revised gasket is being installed. Refer to Figure 1 for proper gasket identification.
It is also important, when servicing a 1991 or 1992 AXODE transaxle, that you check the old pump gasket in the main control. If the old gasket has a piece missing in the area that is not supported, you must find and remove the broken piece of gasket or it may block the rear lube circuit in the valve body.
NOTE:
ALWAYS INSTALL NEW GASKETS WHEN SERVICING THE MAIN CONTROL.
