ISSUE: The accelerator cable may become disengaged from the throttle lever when the speed control cable is activated. The lack of a compression return spring and guide on the accelerator cable may make the cable flexible enough to disengage. A lack of power, with the accelerator pedal possibly dropping to the floor, may be observed. A disengaged cable won't re-engage its attachment to the throttle lever. It will cancel (release) the speed control and will allow the throttle spring to return the throttle plate to curb idle.
ACTION: Replace the existing accelerator cable and dual wound tension return spring assembly with a new accelerator cable (F2DZ-9A758-B). Discard the existing cable and tension spring when removed. Refer to the 1991 Taurus/Sable Car Service Manual, Page 24-60-1, for details.
CAUTION: THE DUAL WOUND RETURN SPRING (9E894) MUST BE REMOVED WHEN THE NEW CABLE IS INSTALLED. OTHERWISE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL EFFORTS WILL BECOME OBJECTIONALLY HIGH AND UNCOMFORTABLE.
