Article No. 91-3-1

FORD: 1990-91 CROWN VICTORIA, TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1990-91 CONTINENTAL, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, SABLE, TOWN CAR

ISSUE: A "clicking" noise when turning the steering wheel may be caused by the upper steering shaft bearing pre-load mechanism. The upper steering shaft pre-load mechanism may not be seated correctly. The "clicking" noise does not affect steering operation.

ACTION: Re-adjust the upper shaft bearing pre-load mechanism to eliminate clicking sound.

1. Hold the steering wheel at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions.

2. Push down on the steering wheel until you feel the steering shaft move against the upper bearing pre-load spring.

3. Release the steering wheel.

4. Repeat this procedure about 10 times to obtain proper seating.
