Engine: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect and remove battery, battery tray and battery tray support bracket.
3. Discharge A/C system.
4. Disconnect windshield washer hose at hood. Mark then remove hood assembly.
5. Disconnect intake air tube and wiring to ignition coil and vane air flow meter.
6. Remove air cleaner and air flow meter assembly.
7. Disconnect intercooler hoses from turbocharger, if equipped.
8. Drain cooling system and remove radiator assembly.
9. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove retaining bracket.
10. Disconnect speedometer cable at connection located under hood.
11. Disconnect and plug fuel lines at fuel filter and pressure regulator.
12. Disconnect power brake booster vacuum hose and disconnect heater hoses at heater core.
13. Mark then disconnect all necessary vacuum hoses.
14. On models with manual transaxle turbocharged engines, disconnect clutch cable and remove support bracket and cable from transaxle.
15. On models with manual transaxle naturally aspirated engines, disconnect clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line.
16. On models with automatic transaxles, remove transaxle cooler lines.
17. On all models, disconnect starter and alternator wiring connectors.
18. Disconnect engine coolant sensors located at the rear of engine block.
19. remove ground strap connection at thermostat cover.
20. Disconnect EGO sensor wire, main wiring harness, throttle position and knock sensor connector, distributor wiring and transaxle wiring.
21. Disconnect ground wire and strap at front of engine.
22. Install lifting eye on engine.
23. Remove engine oil dipstick tube.
24. Remove power steering pump and mounting bracket assembly and position aside.
25. On models with A/C, remove upper A/C compressor mounting bolts.
26. On all models, raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil.
27. On models with A/C, remove lower A/C compressor mounting bolts and position compressor aside.
28. On all models, remove front tire and wheel assemblies.
29. Separate ball joints from steering knuckles.
30. Remove splash shields and drain transaxle oil.
31. Remove drive shafts.
32. Disconnect front exhaust exhaust pipe from engine.
33. Remove frame support bar to engine support bolt.
34. Loosen right control arm bolt and pivot support bar downward.
35. Remove exhaust hangers and allow exhaust system to hand down six inches and support with mechanic's wire.
36. Disconnect transaxle shift linkage and stabilizer bar at transaxle.
37. Remove nuts from front and rear engine mounts.
38. Lower vehicle.
39. Position engine lifting crane tool No. 077-00043, or equivalent. Attach chains onto eyes located on sides of cylinder head.
40. Support engine with crane and remove righthand engine mount through bolt.
41. Raise engine off mounts and slightly pivot engine/transaxle assembly.
42. disconnect oil pressure sensor and route starter/alternator wiring harness from engine.
43. Lift engine out of vehicle by turning assembly to clear brake master cylinder, shift linkage, radiator support and A/C lines.
44. Remove intake manifold support bracket and starter assembly.
45. Mark location and remove transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
46. Separate transaxle from engine.
47. Reverse procedure to install.
