Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

WARNING: DO NOT smoke or carry an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. DO NOT work on any fuel related components when the engine is hot. DO NOT allow excess fuel from the fuel filter or lines to contact any engine or exhaust components. This may cause the fuel to be ignited, resulting in fire and personal injury.

IN-LINE FUEL FILTER

Removal
1. Depressurize the fuel system.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Position a suitable container below the fuel filter to collect any excess fuel that may leak from the filter or lines.

In-Line Fuel Filter:






4. Remove the clamp and outlet line from the top of the filter. Plug the outlet line.
5. Remove the clamp and supply line from the bottom of the filter. Plug the supply line.
6. Remove the fuel filter from the mounting clamp.

Installation
1. Position the new filter in place and tighten the filter mounting clamp.
2. Connect the lower filter supply line to the filter.
3. Install the hose retaining clamp.
4. Connect the upper filter hose to the filter.
5. Connect the negative battery cable.
6. START and RUN the engine.
7. Verify that the fuel system does NOT leak.

IN-TANK FUEL FILTER

Removal
1. Depressurize the fuel system.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Fuel Pump:






3. Remove the fuel tank sending unit/pump.
4. Remove the sock-type filter from the fuel pump assembly.

CAUTION: If the filter is to be reused, be careful not to tear or damage the sock filter. Grasp the filter attaching ring at the top and wiggle while pulling to remove.

Installation
1. Install new filter on pump assembly.
2. Install fuel pump/sending unit into fuel tank.
3. Install rear seat cushion.
4. Connect negative battery cable.
5. START and RUN engine.
6. Verify that fuel system does NOT leak.
