Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
1. Visually check ignition system components. Check for:^ Discharged battery
^ Damaged, loose connections
^ Damaged insulation
^ Poor coil, distributor, and spark plug connections
^ Ignition module connection loose or corroded
^ Blown fuses
^ Damaged vacuum hoses to distributor
^ Damaged or worn distributor cap and rotor
^ Damaged spark plugs
^ Distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires not properly seated
2. Check vehicle maintenance schedule to ensure plugs and wires have been properly maintained.
3. Check plug wires and boots for signs of poor insulation that could cause cross firing.
4. A damaged or worn timing belt can cause symptoms that appear to be ignition timing related.
5. Ensure idle speed is within specification.
