Steering: Service and Repair


If the power steering pump has been serviced, flush the power steering gear and lines prior to installation.
1. Remove and flush power steering pressure hose, then reinstall.
2. Place gear fluid return line in suitable container, then plug reservoir return line at reservoir.
3. Fill reservoir using Motorcraft DEXRON II part No. ESW-M2C-138-CJ or equivalent.
4. Disconnect coil wire, then raise and support front wheels.
5. Add about two quarts of fluid while cranking engine with starter and turning steering wheel right to left.
6. When all the fluid is added, stop cranking engine.
7. Remove reservoir return line plug, then connect line to reservoir.
8. Fill reservoir to specified level.
9. Crank engine with starter and add fluid until level remains constant.
10. While cranking engine, rotate steering wheel from stop to stop. Front wheels must be off the ground during steering wheel stop to stop rotation.
11. Check fluid level, add as required.
12. Start engine, allow to run for several minutes.
13. Rotate steering wheel from far left to right several times.
14. Turn off engine, check fluid level add as required.
