ISSUE:
Customers may experience a split, cracked and/or broken backlite that is not covered by the vehicle basic warranty. This TSB is written to give the technicians a repair procedure to follow when replacing a backlite that is split, cracked and/or broken.

ACTION:
A backlite repair kit is available, allowing dealers to repair the backlite without removing or replacing the entire top when the backlite is split, cracked and/or broken. Obtain and install a Convertible Top Backlite Repair Kit (F4JY-76420A26-S). Refer to the following Service Procedure first and then refer to Instruction Sheet # D-54RO-B836 (included in each kit) for service details. For vehicles with a split, cracked and/or broken convertible top backlite window, the following Service Procedure is to be performed prior to installation of the Convertible Top Backlite Repair Kit.

NOTE:
VEHICLES WITH A BACKLITE DEFECT IN MATERIAL OR WORKMANSHIP ARE COVERED BY THE NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY. VEHICLES WITH SPLIT, CRACKED AND/OR BROKEN BACKLITES ARE NOT COVERED BY THE NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the backlite to make sure that a 25.4 mm (1") margin of the original backlite remains intact and the margin is free of cracks.

NOTE:
PROCEDURE WILL NOT WORK IF PIECES ARE MISSING IN EXCESS OF CROSS DIAMETER 50.8 mm (2") TAPE.

2. Inspect that broken/cracked backlite will be able to have cracked lines mated and taped.

NOTE:
FOR BEST RESULTS, THIS REPAIR PROCEDURE SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 21-32°C (70-90°F).

3. Release convertible top-to-windshield header handles to remove tension of original backlite.

4. Open convertible top storage cover.

5. Place suitable 1/4" flat board or object comparable in size of the backlite on convertible top over rear second bow.

6. Fold top back to have inside of backlite glass laying flat on board or object.

7. Line up split/broken/cracked backlite, so that seam lines shown will exactly mate each other.

8. Using a locally purchased 3M 3710 Highland brand tape, carefully apply over the mated line surface. Be especially careful that the seam is thoroughly mated with its counterpart.

9. Lower convertible top storage cover and secure it in locked position.

10. Lower top backlite panel to stretch backlite.

11. Secure convertible top to back of convertible storage cover. Latch convertible front lock handles to secure top.

12. Apply tape on outside of backlite over mated surfaces, above the same area where the tape was installed on the interior side of the backlite.

13. Inspect that the taped backlite mated seams are aligned and touching each other, but not overlapping (the new backlite will not fit correctly if this is not observed).

14. Backlite glass and convertible top should now be in a taut position for the new backlite installation.

15. Proceed with repair using the instruction provided with the Convertible Top Backlite Repair Kit (F4JY-76420A26-S).
