LEAKS - WATER - CONVERTIBLE TOP - SERVICE TIP
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-93 CAPRI
ISSUE:
This TSB article is designed to assist the technician in diagnosing and repairing water leaks that may appear at the top corners of the convertible top.
ACTION:
Refer to the following Service Procedures for repairing leaks at the convertible top corners.
SERVICE PROCEDURE # 1
FRONT CONVERTIBLE TOP WEATHERSTRIP
1. Unlatch the convertible top.
2. Remove the first, foremost, convertible top side rail weatherstrip on both sides.
3. Apply three (3) strips of 1/8" rolled butyl sealer crosswise on the channel in the weatherstrip carrier. Apply one (1) strip at each end of the weatherstrip, and one (1) across the center. Refer to Figure 1. Reinstall the two (2) weatherstrips onto the convertible top frame.
NOTE:
BE SURE MATING SURFACES ON THE FRONT SIDE RAIL WEATHERSTRIPS JOIN FLAT AND MEET FLUSH WITH THE WINDSHIELD HEADER WEATHERSTRIP. IF DIFFICULTY IS EXPERIENCED IN SEALING THE MATING SURFACES, APPLY FOAM TAPE (E9JY-7651410-A) TO THE JOINT. REFER TO FIGURE 2.
SERVICE PROCEDURE # 2
TOP CORNER FISH PLATES
1. Partially lower the convertible top.
2. Remove the screws retaining the front side weatherstrips and retainers (fish plates).
3. Apply a bead of sealer to the entire outside perimeter gasket face of the retainer (fish plate), and a bead lengthwise across the center. Refer to Figure 3.
4. Refit the retainers (fish plates), weatherstrips and screws.
SERVICE PROCEDURE # 3
HEADER WEATHERSTRIP FIT CONFORMITY
1. With the convertible top latched in position, inspect the A-pillar sections of the windshield header weatherstrips for bulges or wrinkles due to clamping or compression.
2. If, after corrective adjustments, the header weatherstrip is failing to make contact with the vent glass, replace the weatherstrip. Refer to TSB Article 94-7-3 for replacement procedure and correct part number.
3. Install weatherstrip carefully along A-pillar to prevent puckering. This is best achieved by working the weatherstrip carrier slowly down from the tops of the A-pillars. Refer to Figure 4.
NOTE:
IF RESIDUAL STREAMERS ARE NOTED AFTER THE ABOVE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED, INSTALLATION OF THE WATER CATCHER MAY BE NECESSARY TO DIVERT OR CHANNEL THE STREAMER FLOW THROUGH THE DIVISION BAR TO EXIT AT THE DOOR DRAINS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR. REFER TO TSB ARTICLE 96-10-1 FOR DETAILS.
