ASHTRAY - CONSOLE - PLASTIC DOOR BREAKS

FORD:
1992 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992 COUGAR

ISSUE:
The plastic ashtray door may separate. A revised ashtray door is now available for service. The new door does not fit the early 1992 (vehicles built before December 31, 1991) console top.

ACTION:
Replace the ashtray door or console top assembly using the service procedure below. New console top assemblies for service include the revised ashtray door.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

1. Identify the ashtray door to determine its design level.

a. The early built doors have one pin and one hole on the hinge arms that mate to one pin and one hole in the console top.

b. The new doors have two pins on the hinge arms that mate to two holes in the console top.

2. If the ashtray door is of the one pin/one hole design as described in Step 1a, then replace the console top assembly. Refer to the Parts Block in this article for proper usage. Refer to the 1992 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual, Section 01-12, for removal and installation procedure.





3. If the ashtray door is of the new design as described in Step 1b, then replace the door only. Refer to the Parts Block in this article for correct parts usage.

NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION DOES NOT APPLY TO 1991 AND PRIOR MODEL YEARS. THESE VEHICLES HAD CAST MAGNESIUM ASHTRAY DOORS WITH THE ONE PIN/ONE HOLE DESIGN AND WERE AVAILABLE IN BLACK ONLY.
