Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect engine compartment lamp connector and remove dipstick, then mark hinge positions and remove hood.
3. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect and plug A/C compressor lines.
4. Disconnect compressor clutch electrical connectors, power steering pressure switch and alternator wiring harness.
5. Remove fan shroud and fan assembly, then remove upper radiator hose.
6. Remove air cleaner to throttle body tube assembly. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines.
7. Disconnect throttle and kickdown cables from throttle body and remove cable bracket retaining bolts. Position cable and bracket assembly clear of area.
8. Disconnect vacuum lines at upper intake manifold vacuum tee, A/C control panel vacuum supply hose, Thermactor valve and EGR valve.
9. Remove upper intake manifold, then disconnect main engine wiring harness connectors at RH side of dash panel.
10. Disconnect heater hoses at engine and position engine wiring harness sot it can be removed with engine.
11. Disconnect wiring harness from coil and distributor. Relieve fuel system pressure.
12. Disconnect fuel hoses from fuel supply manifold. Cap lines and fittings to prevent contamination.
13. Disconnect lower radiator hose from water pump. Remove radiator.
14. Raise and support vehicle, drain engine oil and remove filter.
15. Remove starter motor, then disconnect HEGO sensors from right and left catalytic converters.
16. Disconnect battery ground cable from LH side of engine, then disconnect transmission cooler line brackets, ground straps and starter motor wiring harness from RH side of engine.
17. Remove torque converter inspection cover and mark one of converter studs to flywheel for alignment during installation.
18. Remove torque converter retaining nuts, then the exhaust manifold heat shield at left manifold flange and disconnect exhaust pipe from flange.
19. Disconnect RH exhaust manifold flange. Loosen transmission mount retaining nut.
20. Remove converter housing to engine bolts, then the motor mount through bolts.
21. Lower vehicle and remove power steering lines. Support transmission with suitable floor jack.
22. Install suitable engine lifting sling on engine lifting eyes. Lift engine assembly clear of engine mounts and remove assembly from vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
