The Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) System controls power assist, which depends upon vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) Module provides a large amount of assist at low speeds and also increases assist as the steering wheel angle increases, during parking, for example. As smaller amount of assist is provided at high speeds to allow greater road "feel."With the Ignition Switch in RUN, voltage is applied to the Steering Sensor and to the Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) Module.
The Power Steering Actuator, which is controlled by the Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) Module, controls a hydraulic valve, which determines the amount of hydraulic assist available to the driver.
