LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-92 COUGAR
ISSUE:
The fuel gauge may not read correctly because the fuel tank reservoir is distorted. The distortion, caused by exposure of the fuel tank material to gasoline, bends the pump/sender unit upward and causes the inaccurate fuel gauge readings. Visual inspection of the pump/sender may not show that it is bent. The gauge may read less than "F" after refueling, drop rapidly from "F" after refueling or the vehicle can only be refueled with 10-14 gallons (38-53 Litres) of gasoline with a gauge reading "E".
ACTION:
Install a new fuel tank made of a revised material along with a new pump/sender unit. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage. Refer to the 1991 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual, Section 10-01, for service details.
