Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
LH Lower Rear Head Bolt Removal:
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system. Remove cooling fan and shroud.
2. Relieve fuel system fuel pressure a described under FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
3. Remove air inlet tube and wiper module.
4. Release belt tensioner and remove accessory drive belt.
5. Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs and ignition wire brackets from camshaft cover studs.
6. Remove ignition wire tray from coil brackets.
7. Remove bolt securing A/C high pressure line to RH coil bracket.
8. Disconnect both ignition coils and CID sensor, then remove nuts securing both coil brackets to front cover.
9. Slide ignition coil brackets and ignition wire assembly off mounting studs and remove.
10. Remove water pump pulley, then disconnect alternator wiring harness from junction block, fender apron and alternator.
11. Remove alternator and mounting bracket.
12. Disconnect positive battery cable at power distribution box, then remove attaching bolt from positive battery cable bracket located on right side of cylinder head.
13. Disconnect vent hose from canister purge solenoid, then place positive battery cable aside.
14. Disconnect canister purge solenoid vent hose from PCV valve, then remove PCV valve from camshaft cover.
15. Remove 42-pin engine harness connector from retaining bracket on brake vacuum booster, then disconnect and position aside.
16. Disconnect HDR sensor, A/C compressor clutch and canister purge solenoid electrical connectors.
17. Raise and support vehicle, then remove bolts retaining power steering pump to engine block and cylinder front cover. Front lower bolt on power steering will not come out completely.
18. Remove bolts attaching oil pan to front cover.
19. Remove crankshaft damper retaining bolt and washer from crankshaft.
20. Install crankshaft damper remover tool No. T58P-6316-D or equivalent on damper, then pull damper from crankshaft.
21. Disconnect EVO sensor and oil sending unit and position aside.
22. Disconnect EGR tube from right exhaust manifold.
23. Disconnect exhaust for right and left manifolds, then suspend with wire.
24. Remove bolt retaining starter wiring harness to rear of right cylinder head, then lower vehicle.
25. Remove right and left camshaft cover to cylinder head.
26. Disconnect accelerator and speed control cables.
27. Remove accelerator bracket from intake manifold and position aside.
28. Disconnect throttle valve cable from throttle body, then the vacuum hose from throttle body elbow port.
29. Disconnect both HEGO sensor and heater supply hose.
30. Remove thermostat housing, then disconnect upper hose and position aside.
31. Remove intake manifold and gaskets.
32. Remove timing chain as described under TIMING CHAIN.
33. Remove bolts attaching left cylinder head. The lower rear bolt cannot be removed due to interference with brake vacuum booster. Use a rubber band or similar item to hold bolt away from engine as shown, Fig. 8.
34. Remove left cylinder head.
35. Remove ground strap retaining heater return line to right cylinder head.
36. Remove bolts attaching right cylinder head. The lower rear bolt cannot be removed due to interference with evaporator housing. Use a rubber band or similar item to hold bolt away from engine as shown, Fig. 8.
37. Remove right cylinder head.
38. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 45°. This ensures that all pistons are below top of engine block deck face.
b. Torque cylinder head bolts in three steps, in sequence shown in Fig. 9. First to 15-22 ft. lbs., then rotate in sequence 85-95°., then an additional 85-95°.
c. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 45°. This will position crankshaft at TDC No. 1. Crankshaft must only be rotated in clockwise direction and only as far as TDC.
d. Tighten to specifications.
