Courtesy Lamp: Description and Operation
Voltage is present at the Engine Compartment Lamp, the Glove Box Lamp, the Trunk Lid Lamp and the Vanity Lamps at all times through Fuse 4.
Engine Compartment Lamp
Opening the hood causes the Engine Compartment Lamp mercury switch to close. Current flows through Fuse 4, circuit 54 (LG/Y) and the Engine Compartment Lamp to ground: The Engine Compartment Lamp illuminates.
Glove Box Lamp
Opening the glove box door closes the Glove Box Lamp switch contacts. Current flows through Fuse 4, circuit 54 (LG/Y) and the Glove Box Lamp to ground: the Glove Box Lamp illuminates.
Trunk Lid Lamp
Lifting the trunk lid causes the Trunk Lid Lamp mercury switch to close. Current flows through Fuse 4, circuit 54 (LG/Y) and the Trunk Lid Lamp to ground: the Trunk Lid Lamp illuminates.
Vanity Lamps
Pivoting the sunvisor down and opening the Vanity Mirror cover causes the Vanity Lamp switch contacts to close. Current flows through Fuse 4, circuit 54 (LG/Y) and the Vanity Lamps to ground: the Vanity Lamps illuminate.
I/P Cigar Lighter Lamp
The I/P Cigar Lighter Lamp is grounded at all times. Moving the Main Light Switch to PARK or HEAD applies voltage to the I/P Cigar Lighter Lamp on circuit 14 (BR): the lamp illuminates.
Dome/Reading Lamps
Three types of Dome/Reading Lamps are available: the standard production Dome Lamp, an optional Front Dome/Reading Lamp and a Rear Dome/Reading Lamp (Grand Marquis only).
Standard Production Dome Lamp
Voltage is present at the Main Light Switch, all four Door Jamb Switches, the Illuminated Entry Module (if equipped) and the Keyless Entry Module (if equipped) at all times through Fuse 4.
Twisting the Main Light Switch knob fully counterclockwise or opening any door causes curent to flow to the Dome Lamp. The Lamp turns on and stays on until the Main Light Switch knob is twisted clockwise or all doors are closed.
If the vehicle is equipped with Illuminated or Keyless Entry, lifting either front door handle or pressing any button on the Keyless Entry Switch Assembly (with Keyless Entry) causes the Dome Lamp to turn on. The Lamp, however, turns off automatically after about 25 seconds (unless a door is opened or the Main Light Switch knob is twisted fully counterclockwise).
Front Dome/Reading Lamp
Operation of the dome lamp portion of the Front Dome/Reading Lamp is exactly the same as operation of the standard production dome lamp. A reading lamp bulb is also mounted on either side of the dome lamp bulb. Each reading lamp is controlled by a rocker switch built into the Front Dome/Reading Lamp housing. Voltage is present at the reading lamp bulbs at all times through Fuse 4 and circuit 54 (LG/Y).
Rear Dome/Reading Lamp
The Rear Dome/Reading Lamp uses the same bulbs for both dome lamp and reading lamp functions. With the lamp lenses in the "flat" position, the bulbs are used as dome lamps and operate the same as the standard production dome lamps. If pressure is applied to the outboard edge of either lens, the lens will rotate and the lamp will turn on and act as a reading lamp. Pushing on the inboard edge of the lens will return the lens to the "flat" position and dome lamp operation.
All Other Courtesy Lamps
Operation of all other Courtesy Lamps (the I/P Courtesy Lamps, the Front Door Courtesy Lamps and the Lock Cylinder Lamps (if equipped with illuminated or Keyless Entry) is the same as operation of the standard production dome lamp.
