Safety Recall 92S47 - All 1986-1992 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable Station Wagons For Underfloor Storage Compartment Cover Latch Replacement

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 1986 through 1992 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable station wagons built from Job # 1 1986, through May 4, 1992.

REASONS FOR RECALL

Children may inadvertently lock themselves in the footwell area of the rear-facing third seat or the underfloor storage compartment if it is open or unlocked while they are playing unattended in the vehicle. Once the compartment is closed, it cannot be opened from the inside, and there is a danger of air deprivation, excessive heat and panic response to a child who may have closed himself or herself in the compartment.

To correct this condition, dealers are to install a new type of latch for this compartment that does not close itself automatically. This new latch also allows a closed cover to be pushed open from inside the compartment unless it has been locked with the key after being closed.
