AXOD-E Uncontrollable Lock-Up
These complaints may be caused by pump plate and lock-up solenoid mismatch.
1. TCC applies with 1-2 shift.
2. Chugs engine on coastdown.
3. TCC won't release with the brake.
For proper TCC control it is imperative that the pump spacer plate match the type of solenoid used, and the year and model of the vehicle.
To verify that the solenoid and plate match, first identify the type of lock-up solenoid.
If hole "A" is approximately .030 in diameter the plate matches the square (NON-MLUS) type
solenoid.
If the hole is approximately .215 in diameter then it matches the round (MLUS) type solenoid.
MLUS and NON-MLUS systems are not interchangeable.
1991- TAURUS and SABLE use NON-MLUS.
1991- LINCOLN uses MLUS.
1992- All models use MLUS.
Note
As a quick external identification look at the color of the top wiring connector. The TOP connector is gray for MLUS systems and black for non-MLUS.
