RADIO - ELECTRONIC SEARCH RADIO (ESR) OR ELECTRONIC SEARCH CASSETTE AUDIO SYSTEM (ESC) - MAY NOT TURN "ON" AFTER ENGINE IS STARTED - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 2/1/92
FORD: 1992 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 SABLE
ISSUE: Sometimes, the Electronic Search Radio (ESR) or the Electronic Search Cassette Audio System (ESC) may not turn "ON" after the engine is started. This is most likely to occur when the vehicle's crank time is less than one (1) second and when a warm engine is started. This inoperable condition will be displayed in either of the following ways...
^ The radio is "OFF" prior to starting the vehicle, then the radio cannot be turned "ON" after the engine has been started.
^ The radio is "ON" prior to starting the vehicle. The engine is started, and the radio becomes inoperable. When this condition occurs, the "ON/OFF" switch will not make the radio operable.
ACTION: Return the radio to the Authorized Ford Audio Repair Center for replacement or repair as outlined in TSB Article 90-22-9 or Audio Service Bulletin AR 18-91. If a replacement radio is not available at the time of service, the condition can be temporarily cleared using the following service procedure.
1. Turn the ignition "OFF".
2. Turn the ignition "ON".
3. Wait 1 to 2 seconds, then restart the engine.
The radio will then be operational.
NOTE: A RADIO REPAIRED BY THE AUTHORIZED FORD REPAIR CENTER MAY REMAIN "ON" FOR 1 TO 1 1/2 SECONDS AFTER THE IGNITION IS TURNED "OFF". THIS CONDITION IS NORMAL. THEREFORE, DO NOT REPLACE THE RADIO IF THIS IS THE CASE.
