LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 SABLE

ISSUE:
An interior "squeak" from the rear of the vehicle may be caused by a rear window moulding that binds on the window glass.

ACTION:
Determine if the squeaks are from the rear window moulding area. Repair the squeaks. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the "angel wing" trim panels from the interior of the vehicle. Remove the right and left quarter windows. Discard the butyl tape left on the quarter windows and body.

2. "Rough-up" the underside of the rear window moulding along the entire length of the right and left sides of the rear window moulding lip with 120 grit sandpaper, see Figure 1.

3. Using a utility knife, cut off the two (2) moulding projection nibs located under the backglass lip on both sides of the vehicle, see Figures 2 and 3.

4. Apply Krytox GPL205 grease to the underside of the 4 corners of the rear window moulding using a plastic squeegee, see Figure 3.

5. Apply Krytox GPL105 oil, with a cotton swab, between the painted surface of the roof and the roof mouldings. Also apply oil between the backglass lip moulding and the roof halo moulding. Using a plastic squeegee, work the oil under the lips, see Figure 4.

6. Apply Krytox GPL105 oil, with a cotton swab, between backglass moulding and the body, in the lower corners. Use the plastic squeegee to work in the oil, see Figure 5.

7. Drill out the rivets that attach the backglass stops to the package tray and remove the stops.

NOTE:
TO ENSURE THAT THE DRILL BIT DOES NOT CONTACT OR DAMAGE THE BACK GLASS, MAKE SURE TO INSTALL A DRILL BIT STOP OR MARK THE BIT SO YOU DRILL TO A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF 1/2 (12.7 MM).

8. Plug the holes with RTV Silicone Sealer, see Figure 6.

9. Install both quarter windows with new butyl tape and torque the attaching nuts to 2-3 N-m (18-27 lb.in.), see Figure 7.

10. With the decklid closed, determine whether the decklid is contacting the backglass moulding. If there is contact, refit the decklid (upward and aft) until there is approximately 1.0 mm decklid-to-moulding clearance.
