Article No.

01/05/93

STEERING - HIGHER STEERING EFFORTS - VEHICLES WITH VARIABLE ASSIST POWER STEERING (VAPS), EXCEPT TAURUS SHO

FORD:
1990-92 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1988-92 CONTINENTAL
1990-92 SABLE

ISSUE:
A slight increase in steering efforts may be experienced during the course of any one turning maneuver. This condition is intermittent and may occur in either direction and at any road speed. It is caused by internal gear leakage.

ACTION:
If normal diagnostics/inspection of the steering system reveals no obvious faults, this condition is probably caused by internal gear leakage. Install a new power steering "short rack" assembly with improved control valve to sealing ring tolerance. Refer to the 1988-91 Continental/Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 13-47, and the 1992 Continental/Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 11-02, for service details.

NOTE:
THE "SHORT RACK" ASSEMBLY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE BOOTS, CLAMPS AND INNER TIE RODS.
