Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner, hoses, and tubes.
2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. Disconnect engine electrical connectors, then remove main wiring harness bracket attaching bolt, position electrical harness aside.
4. Remove shift lever, then remove EGR and throttle body brackets attaching bolts, then install engine lifting eyes.
5. Remove transaxle dipstick.
6. Remove throttle cable cover.
7. Remove Throttle Valve (TV) cable as follows:
a. Remove throttle valve cable from throttle body lever.
b. Remove one throttle valve cable to transaxle case attaching bolt.
c. Pull up on throttle valve cable, then disconnect throttle valve cable from TV link.

CAUTION: Use caution not to bend internal TV bracket.

8. Remove radiator sight shield, then turn air suspension switch in luggage compartment to Off position.
9. Disconnect power steering pump pressure and return line bracket.
10. Install suitable engine support fixture to three engine lift points, then raise engine slightly to relieve weight from engine mounts.
11. Remove four torque converter housing attaching bolts from top of transaxle.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheels.
13. Proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect lefthand outer tie rod end.
b. Remove front stabilizer bar assembly attaching bolts.
c. Remove suspension height sensor, then brake line support brackets.
d. Disconnect righthand lower arm assembly.
e. Disconnect lefthand lower arm assembly.
f. Remove steering gear attaching nuts.
14. Remove front Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) sensor.
15. Disconnect Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensors.
16. Remove exhaust Y-pipe from engine and rear portion of exhaust system.
17. Remove two bolts from lefthand engine support mount.
18. Position suitable subframe removal tool below subframe.
19. Remove power steering gear from sub frame, then secure to rear of engine compartment.
20. Remove sub-frame attaching bolts, then lower sub-frame from vehicle.
21. Remove dust cover attaching bolt.
22. Remove two starter attaching bolts, then position aside.
23. Remove dust cover.
24. Rotate engine with 1/2 inch drive ratchet and a 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley bolt to align torque converter bolts with starter drive hole.
25. Remove four torque converter to flywheel attaching nuts, then using tool No. T86P-77265-AH or equivalent, disconnect transaxle cooler lines.
26. Remove engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
27. Position suitable jack under transaxle oil pan, then remove vehicle speed sensor from transaxle.

NOTE: Vehicles with electronic instrument clusters do not use a speedometer cable.

28. Remove halfshafts as follows:
a. Screw extension tool No. T86P-3514-A2 into CV joint puller tool No. T86P-3514-A1 and install slide hammer tool No. D79P-100-A or equivalent into extension.
b. Position puller behind CV joint and remove joint.

CAUTION: Ensure puller does not contact turbine speed sensor or sensor damage may result.

29. Remove two remaining torque converter housing attaching bolts.
30. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower transaxle out of vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install.
