ISSUE:
The upper intake manifold bolts and studs may seize when attempting to remove them. This is caused by "Galvanic" action. Torque specifications and tightening sequence have also been changed.
ACTION:
To eliminate the possibility of breaking a stud or bolt, coat the threads with pipe sealant that contains Teflon. Use the revised procedure and torque specification along with Teflon pipe sealant (D8AZ-19554-A, or equivalent). Refer to the following procedure for service details.
UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD (1988-1994)
1. Position a NEW upper intake manifold gasket on top of the lower intake manifold.
2. Apply a coat of pipe sealant with Teflon (D8AZ-19554-A, or equivalent) to the threads.
3. Install the bolts and studs in their original locations.
4. Tighten in sequence in three (3) steps starting with the four center bolts to the following specifications. See Figure 1.
a. 10 N-m (8 lb.ft.)
b. 20 N-m (15 lb.ft.)
c. 32 N-m (24 lb.ft.)
LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD (1990-1994)
1. Position NEW intake gaskets and end seals (Refer to the appropriate model year Service Manual Section for correct installation).
2. Install the bolts and studs in their original locations.
3. Tighten in two steps in numerical sequence to the following specifications. See Figure 2.
a. 18 N-m (13 lb.ft.)
