This TSB is being republished in its entirety to correct the superseded article list.

ISSUE:
In a few cases, hoses such as power steering hoses have been found to be mislocated following certain service operations in the engine compartment. Misrouted power steering hoses can develop leaks (e.g. power steering hose can rub against moving parts) and cause aggravating inconvenience to customers and even cause a fire if a hose ruptures.

ACTION:
New parts kits are available to make it easier to replace power steering hoses and to restore proper hose routing. Detailed installation instructions are included in each kit. When replacing power steering hoses, be sure to install the correct hose/heat shield kit. Refer to the Parts Block in this article for correct parts usage and the individual Instruction Sheet (# 6491 through # 6497) for installation details.

When performing any service operations in the engine compartment that involve moving or gaining access to the engine, transmission, chassis, or steering system, care must be taken to make sure that the routing of the power steering hoses is restored to original position and the heat shield in front of the steering gear remains in the position indicated on Figure 1.

To make it easier to service power steering hoses on the subject vehicles, seven (7) new power steering hose/heat shield service kits are now available. Each service kit includes the following:

^ One (1) - Pressure Hose

^ One (1) or Two (2) - Return Hoses (as appropriate)

^ One (1) - Service Steering Gear Heat Shield

^ One (1) - Pump Outlet Fitting (where required)

^ Two (2) - Seals (where required)

^ Three (3) - Nylon Tie Straps

^ Two (2) - Stainless Steel Tie Straps

^ One (1) - Instruction Sheet (# 6491-6497)

When replacing power steering hoses, verify the following:

1. Be sure that the proper service kit is used for replacement of the power steering hoses and heat shield. Refer to the Parts Block in this article for correct parts usage.

2. Check to see that the power steering lines are routed correctly between the EGR tube and transmission dipstick, with adequate clearance to all heat sources.

3. Be sure the power steering pump outlet fittings are replaced with new outlet fittings (1988 and 1989 model years).

4. Be certain that all parts in the service kit are used and that the detailed step-by-step service instructions enclosed in the kit are followed.

Refer to the Instruction Sheets in kits # 1 through 7.
