^ TRANSAXLE - AXODE - OIL PUMP AND VALVE BODY CHECK BALL LOCATIONS - SERVICE TIPS

^ TRANSAXLE - AXODE - ONE-WAY CLUTCH TWO-WAY ROTATION (3.0L), NO SHIFTS, HARSH SHIFTS, OR EXTENDED SHIFTS

FORD:
1991-92 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-92 CONTINENTAL, SABLE

ISSUE:
One-way clutch two-way rotation at extended mileage, no shifts, harsh shifts, or extended shifts may be caused by oil pump body and valve body check balls that are not in the correct location or are missing after the transaxle has been overhauled.

ACTION:
Make sure the correct number of check balls are installed in their proper location during reassembly. Refer to the transaxle model tag attached to the top of the converter housing for model identification, Figure 1. Refer to the following check list for the correct number and location of the check balls.

^ For 1991 transaxles F1DP-BA with serial numbers 137993 to 187142, remove the valve body and confirm that the check balls are like those shown in Figure 2. If not, rework as shown.

^ The 1991 oil pump body has two (2) configurations. Early 1991 models have check ball # 12, Figure 2. Late 1991 models do not have check ball # 12, Figure 3.

^ The 1992 oil pump body has only one configuration. There are four (4) check balls, Figure 4. Starting in 1992, the # 2 check ball is included and check ball # 13 is not.

^ The valve body has seven (7) check balls and the locations are the same for all 1991 and 1992 models, Figure 5.
