RADIO - INTERMITTENT OPERATION, VOLUME CHANGE OR INTERMITTENT CHANNEL OPERATION

FORD:
1992 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992 SABLE

ISSUE:
Intermittent radio operation, volume fluctuations or intermittent speaker (channel) operation may occur when traveling over bumps. This may be caused by pinched wires located under a connector bracket near the left side kick panel and above the brake release. There are four (4) connectors mounted on a gray bracket, attached to the sheet metal behind and above the left side kick panel. These wires may fan out and become trapped under the bracket mounting tabs.

ACTION:
Inspect the wiring beneath the brackets and repair if necessary. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

REMOVAL AND INSPECTION

1. Remove the parking brake manual release handle and cable assembly. Refer to the 1992 Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 06-05-5, for the removal procedure.

2. Remove the three (3) bolts that mount the parking brake control assembly to the left side cowl.

3. Move the assembly away from the left side cowl area to expose the area of the wiring bracket.

4. Check for any pinched or trapped wiring before removing the bracket.

5. Remove the two (2) bolts that hold the bracket to the left side cowl area.

6. Pull the bracket and connector assembly down.

INSPECTION

1. Inspect the wiring for breaks, wear or possible open circuits. If any of these conditions exist, proceed as follows:

a. Repair the wires.

b. Tape the harness (14405).

c. Position the wiring into the cowl side before remounting the bracket.

2. If the wiring is not damaged, follow the installation instructions in this article and continue with the proper radio diagnostic procedures.

INSTALLATION

1. Mount the connector bracket.

2. Reposition the parking brake control assembly.

3. Reinstall the bolts and tighten to 17-26 lb.ft. (23-35 N-m).

4. Install the parking brake manual release handle and cable assembly. Refer to the 1992 Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 06-05-5 for the installation procedure.
