Air Cleaner Housing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamp from the throttle body and disconnect the tube.
2. Disconnect the PCV inlet tube. Disconnect the zip tube from the air cleaner tray using a screwdriver inserted between the tray and the top of the plastic adapter.
3. Disconnect the pulse air tube from the air cleaner tray.
4. Loosen the resonator tuning tube clamp at the air cleaner cover.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly retaining screws, and remove the air cleaner and outlet tube assembly.
6. Loosen the resonator tuning tube clamp at the air cleaner cover.
7. Check the inside surfaces of the cover for traces of dirt leakage past the filter element as a result of damaged element seals, wrong element, or improper torque on the cover retaining screws.
8. Remove the air cleaner element and clean the sealing surfaces of the cover and tray. Install a new element after visually inspecting the element for possible damage in handling such as deformed seals or holes in the paper.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the outlet tube to the air cleaner cover. Make sure the notch in the tube is aligned to the bump on the cover, and tighten the clamp to 1.4-2.3 Nm (12.0-20.0 lb in).
2. Position the air cleaner assembly on its mounting bracket, attaching the air cleaner cover and resonator tuning tube at the same time. Make sure that the mounting grommets are installed with the metal flange side up, and tighten the retaining screws to 1.7-2.8 Nm (15.0-25.0 lb in).
3. Connect the PCV inlet tube, pulse air tube and zip tube.
4. Install the air cleaner outlet air tube to the throttle body and tighten the clamp to 1.4-2.3 Nm (12.0-20.0 lb in).
5. Tighten the resonator tuning tube to 1.4-2.3 Nm (12.0-20.0 lb in).
6. Start the engine and check for vacuum leaks around both ends of the tube from the air cleaner to the throttle body and resonator tuning tube.
