Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery from vehicle.2. Remove battery tray and air cleaner as an assembly from vehicle.
3. Scribe hood hinge positions on hood for reference during assembly.
4. Discharge air conditioning system, if equipped. Cap all open lines.
5. Drain engine cooling system.
6. Locate Schrader valve on fuel rail assembly, then remove protective cap.
7. Cover valve with shop towel, then using a small screwdriver, press inner valve stem inward slowly to release fuel system pressure. Ensure all pressure is released.
8. Disconnect all fuel lines from engine assembly, then position them aside.
9. Remove upper radiator hose.
10. Mark and record all electrical connector locations, then disconnect and set aside all wiring looms and connectors at junction blocks.
11. Mark and record all vacuum line connections, then disconnect all vacuum lines and crankcase ventilation hoses.
12. Disconnect power steering high pressure and return lines from power steering pump.
13. Remove power steering reservoir.
14. Disconnect air conditioning lines from condenser, leaving manifold lines attached to compressor.
15. Disconnect accelerator linkage, transaxle throttle valve linkage and speed control cable, if equipped.
16. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
17. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle cooler lines from radiator.
18. On all models, remove coolant overflow bottle, then lower radiator hose.
19. Remove power steering lines at rear of engine above transaxle.
20. Raise and support vehicle, then drain engine oil.
21. Disconnect heater hoses from engine, then position hoses aside.
22. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
23. Support center of exhaust system, then disconnect Y-pipe from engine exhaust manifolds.
24. Remove bolt retaining air conditioning line to engine block.
25. Disconnect tie rod ends from spindle assemblies.
26. Disconnect lower ball joints, then pull down on lower control arms to disengage ball joints from spindle.
27. Remove axle halfshaft assemblies from transaxle, then install plugs.
28. Lower vehicle, then remove ignition coil bracket retaining bolts. Position coil assembly out of the way.
29. Install engine lifting eyes part No. D81L-6001-D or equivalent, at front of righthand cylinder head and rear of lefthand cylinder head.
30. Remove through bolts from engine mounts.
31. Carefully lift engine out of vehicle, using universal load positioning sling tool No. 014-00036 or equivalent to tilt engine vertically to clear master cylinder.
32. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Fill and check transaxle fluid.
b. Fill and check cooling system for leaks after engine warm up.
c. If equipped, evacuate and recharge air conditioning system.
d. Adjust ignition timing, if necessary.
e. Road test vehicle. When the battery has been disconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the EEC-IV processor relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
