Steering Gear: Adjustments

Fig. 17 Adjusting Rack Yoke Plug Preload:





1. Clean exterior of steering gear thoroughly.
2. Mount gear in holding fixture tool No. D87P-3504-B or equivalent. Do not hold gear in vise.
3. Do not remove external pressure lines unless they are leaking.
4. Drain gear by rotating input shaft from lock to lock with input shaft torque adapter tool No. T81P-3504-R or equivalent.
5. Loosen yoke plug locknut and yoke plug with yoke locknut wrench tool No. T81P-3504-G or equivalent.
6. With rack in center position, torque yoke plug to 44-50 inch lbs. Clean threads of yoke plug prior to tightening, Fig. 17.
7. Install yoke plug adapter tool No. T78P-3504-G or equivalent. Mark location of 0° on housing. Back off adjuster so 48° mark lines up with 0° mark.
8. While holding yoke plug, tighten yoke plug locknut to specifications.
9. Check input shaft torque after tightening locknut.
