FORD: 1988-92 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-92 TOPAZ


ISSUE:
Semi-metallic front or rear brake linings may "squeal" during brake application or "groan" during brake release from a stopped position. There may also be premature rear brake lining wear.

ACTION:
Determine the source of the noise and replace the front and/or rear brake lining assemblies using the service procedure below.


SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Determine if the "squeal" or "groan" noise is coming from the front of the car.

2. If the front of the car is the source of the noise, replace the front brake shoe and lining assemblies (F23Z-2001-A). Refer to the 1992 Tempo/Topaz Service Manual, Section 06-03, for removal and installation procedures.

3. Check again for a "squeal" or "groan" noise.

4. If the noise is still present, replace the rear brake lining assemblies (F23Z-2200-A). Refer to the 1992 Tempo/Topaz Service Manual, Section 06-02, for removal and installation procedures.



5. If the rear brake linings are wearing prematurely, replace the lining assemblies with (F23Z-2200-A). Refer to the 1992 Tempo/Topaz Service Manual, Section 06-02, for removal and installation procedures.
