^ PAINT - ROUGH TEXTURE AND/OR ORANGE/RUST DOTS DUE TO IRON PARTICLES
FORD: 1992 and after CROWN VICTORIA, ESCORT, FESTIVA, MUSTANG, PROBE, TAURUS, TEMPO, THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 and after CAPRI, CONTINENTAL, COUGAR, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, SABLE, TOPAZ, TOWN CAR, TRACER
LIGHT TRUCK: 1992 and after AEROSTAR, BRONCO, ECONOLINE, EXPLORER, F SUPER DUTY, F-150-350 SERIES, RANGER
ISSUE: Hot iron dust particles from such sources as railroad wheels may imbed themselves into the surface of the paint. On some light colored vehicles, after some weathering, tiny dots of orange rust may start to appear. They feel rough to the touch and are difficult to remove.
ACTION: To remove these particles, USE ONLY the following procedure. The materials in this procedure are alkaline, acidic and neutral. They must be used in the specified order. Any changes to this procedure will cause an unsatisfactory repair or possible damage to the painted surfaces.
NOTE: THIS TSB ARTICLE SUPERSEDES PAINT REPAIR TOPIC "A" OF TSB ARTICLE 91-18-1. THE REMAINING PART OF TSB 91-18-1 IS STILL VALID.
CAUTION: THE USE OF ANY OTHER PRODUCT OR PROCEDURE MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO ALUMINUM PARTS OR PAINTED SURFACES. RINSE THOROUGHLY AFTER APPLICATION.
WARNING: THE TECHNICIAN MUST WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EYE PROTECTION TO PREVENT SKIN IRRITATION.
1. Rinse the vehicle to remove unwanted dirt and dust,then proceed as follows:
a. Mix Finish Kare # 1119 Soil and Coating Remover, 1 part # 1119 to 4 parts of cold water.
b. Use a clean wash mitt and apply the mixture to the entire vehicle. Keep the surfaces wet for 5 to 10 minutes.
CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW THE MIXTURE TO DRY OR STREAK DOWN THE SIDES OF THE VEHICLE. REMITT TO AVOID STREAKS AND DRYING.
c. Rinse with cold water.
d. Make sure the vehicle is clean and dry.
e. Using a dry wash mitt or sponge, apply Finish Kare # 833 Rust Remover or equivalent directly to the surface on one panel at a time.
f. Keep the area wet for up to 5 minutes.
2. Rinse the surface with a strong jet of water to completely remove the particles.
3. If the particles are not completely removed, repeat Steps 1 and 2 again.
4. After the iron particles are removed, apply Finish Kare # 118SC Liquid Neutralizer Concentrate Shampoo or equivalent. This is required to neutralize the removal action.
a. Mix the concentrate at 1 part concentrate to 100 parts water.
b. Apply the neutralizer shampoo with a mitt or sponge.
c. Rinse with clean water.
NOTE: THE NEUTRALIZER CONCENTRATE IS A HEAVY DUTY SHAMPOO AND CAN BE USED IN AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH SYSTEM.
5. If fine scratches appear on the surface, use available aftermarket light "finessing" compounds with a foam pad to remove scratches.
6. Polish as necessary.
