Exploded View Of ATX Transaxle (Part 2 Of 2):






NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View Of ATX Transaxle when performing transaxle disassembly procedures.

1. Mount transaxle in bench mounted holding fixture tool No. T57L-500-B or equivalent.

Torque Converter Removal:






2. Install converter handles tool No. T81P-7902-C or equivalent and lift converter out of transaxle.
3. Remove oil pump drive shaft.
4. Remove converter turbine sleeve.
5. Remove fluid dipstick tube attaching bolt and tube from case.
6. Remove governor cover by prying retainer out of case, then pry cover out of case.
7. Remove seal from case and discard.
8. Remove governor, then inspect governor gear for wear. If any indication of wear, the drive and driven gear should be replaced. If there is flyweight pin wear, the governor assembly should be replaced.

Pipe Plug & Filter Removal, (1992 models):






9. On 1992 models, remove pipe plug and lift out filter.
10. On all models, remove 13 oil pan attaching bolts.
11. Remove oil pan and discard gasket.
12. Remove three oil filter attaching bolts and remove filter, discard seal, and thoroughly clean filter.
13. Remove six differential bearing retainer attaching bolts, retainer, and bearing spacer shim.
14. Remove differential assembly.
15. Remove ten valve body cover attaching bolts. Transaxle identification tag is attached to case by a valve body bolt.

NOTE: Tag must be replaced during assembly.

16. Remove valve body cover and discard gasket.
17. Disconnect throttle lever return spring, then loosen 27 valve body attaching bolts.
18. Remove main oil pressure regulator baffle plate.

NOTE: Seven battle attaching bolts are longer on the main oil pressure regulator plate; keep them separate from other valve body bolts.

19. Remove transaxle control baffle plate.
20. Remove detent spring and roller assembly.
21. Disengage Z-link from manual valve and remove valve body.
22. Use a screwdriver to partially pry speedometer driven gear retaining pin out of the case, then remove pin using side cutters.
23. Using a hammer handle, remove speedometer driven gear from case.
24. Remove and discard seven oil pump attaching bolts and washers.

Pump Body Removal:






25. Remove pump body using impact slide hammer tool No. T50T-100-A, remover adapter tool No. T81P-78103-A, and adapter attaching bolts tool No. T81P-78103-B or equivalent. On models equipped with No. 12 steel bronze type thrust washer, ensure washer is not stuck to pump body.
26. Remove and discard pump gasket.
27. Remove No. 11 Thrust bearing (needle) from intermediate clutch.

NOTE: On some models, No. 12 (nylon) thrust washer will be attached to No. 11 thrust bearing.

28. Remove intermediate clutch.

No. 10 Thrust Bearing Removal:






29. Remove No. 10 thrust bearing (needle) from direct clutch.

NOTE: On some vehicles, the No. 10 thrust bearing (needle) is not used.

30. Remove direct clutch, then the intermediate clutch hub and ring gear assembly.
31. Remove No. 7 thrust washer from planetary assembly.
32. Remove reverse clutch snap ring, then remove reverse clutch pack.
33. Remove planetary assembly.
34. Remove No. 5 thrust washer from planetary assembly.
35. Remove reverse clutch return springs and holder assembly.
36. Remove reverse clutch piston.
37. Pry reverse clutch cylinder up, then remove from case.

Servo Retaining Ring Replacement:






38. Install servo remover tool No. T81P-70027-A or equivalent and remove servo retaining ring. An oversize nut will have to be installed under the rear spacer to compensate for the motor mount thickness.
39. Back center screw out until spring pressure is removed from servo, then remove tool and servo.
40. Remove low-intermediate band.
41. Remove sun gear and drum assembly.
42. Remove No. 4 thrust washer from transfer housing.
43. Remove and discard five transfer housing attaching bolts.

Transfer Housing Removal:






44. Using a screwdriver, pry transfer housing from idler gear shaft.

CAUTION: Lift upward only when prying housing, otherwise damage to idler teeth can occur.

45. Remove transfer housing, then the No. 3 thrust bearing (needle) from input gear.
46. Remove input gear and input gear caged needle bearing (No. 2).
47. Remove No. 1 thrust bearing (needle).

Idler Gear Shaft Replacement:






48. Position a 12 mm allen wrench in idler gear shaft and allow wrench to catch on side of case, then remove nut from shaft using a 32 mm 12 point socket.
49. Tap idler gear shaft with a hammer handle to loosen 0-ring seal, then remove idler gear and shaft from case.
