Courtesy Lamp: Description and Operation
Engine Compartment Lamp
Voltage is present at the Engine Compartment Lamp mercury switch at all times through the ROOM Fuse.
Opening the hood causes the Engine Compartment Lamp mercury switch to close. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse and the Engine Compartment Lamp to ground. The Engine Compartment Lamp illuminates.
Map Lamps (with Moonroof)
Voltage is present at the Map Lamp bulbs at all times through the ROOM Fuse.
Pushing on the Right or Left Map Lamp lens causes that Map Lamp Switch's contacts to close. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse, the Map Lamp bulb and the Map Lamp Switch to ground. The Map Lamp illuminates.
Pushing on the Map Lamp lens a second time causes the Map Lamp Switch contacts to open, turning off the Map Lamp.
Map Lamps (without Moonroof)
Voltage is present at the Map Lamp switches at all times through the ROOM Fuse. The Map Lamp bulbs are grounded through the Dome Lamp Assembly.
Moving the Right or Left Map Lamp rocker switch closes that switch's contact. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse, the Map Lamp Switch and the Map Lamp bulb to ground. The Map Lamp illuminates.
Moving the rocker switch back again causes the switch contacts to open, turning off the Map Lamp.
Dome Lamp
Voltage is present at the Dome Lamp bulb at all times through the ROOM Fuse.
With the Dome Lamp Switch in the OFF position, the Dome Lamp will not operate.
With the Dome Lamp Switch in the DOOR position, voltage is present at each of the Door Courtesy Lamp Switches through the Dome Lamp bulb. Opening a door causes that door's Courtesy Lamp Switch contacts to close. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse and the Dome Lamp to ground. The Dome Lamp illuminates until the Dome Lamp Switch is moved to the DOOR or OFF position.
Illuminated Vanity Mirrors
Voltage is present at the Illuminated Vanity Mirrors at all times through the ROOM Fuse.
Pivoting the Sunvisor down and opening the Illuminated Vanity Mirror Switch contacts to close. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse and the Illuminated Vanity Mirror to ground. The Illuminated Vanity Mirror turns ON.
Luggage Compartment Lamp (4 Door Sedan)
Voltage is present at the Luggage Compartment Lamp at all times through the ROOM Fuse.
Opening the trunk lid causes the Luggage Compartment Switch contacts to close. Current flows through the ROOM Fuse, the Luggage Compartment Lamp and the Luggage Compartment Switch to ground. The Luggage Compartment Lamp illuminates.
Closing the trunk lid causes the Luggage Compartment Switch contacts to open, turning off the Luggage Compartment Lamp.
Luggage Compartment Lamp (Station Wagons and hatchbacks)
Voltage is present at the Luggage Compartment Lamp Switch at all times through the ROOM Fuse and the Luggage Compartment Lamp bulb.
Opening the liftgate causes the Liftgate Latch Switch contacts to close. If the Luggage Compartment Lamp Switch is turned ON, current flows through the Room Fuse, the Luggage Compartment Lamp Switch and the Liftgate Latch Switch to ground. The Luggage Compartment Lamp illuminates.
Closing the liftgate or turning the Luggage Compartment Lamp Switch OFF turns off the Luggage Compartment Lamp.
Station Wagon models also have a Liftgate Ajar Indicator in the Instrument Cluster that illuminates when the Ignition Switch is in START or RUN and the liftgate is unlatched.
