Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Service and Repair
CAUTION:^ Wear approved eye protection.
^ Do not wash EGR valve in solvents or degreaser. Sand blasting is not recommended; valve damage may result.
1. Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Remove retaining bolts and valve.
2. With a wire wheel or brush, remove deposits from mounting surface and valve.
3. Open valve with an external vacuum source and check for excessive buildup of carbon deposits. Anything more than a thin film is excessive.
4. Using a suitable sharp edged tool, scrape carbon deposits from valve poppet. Do not scratch valve seat or dislodge poppet from its stem.
5. Check for wear of poppet valve and stem.
If any wear is noticed, control valve should be replaced.
6. Install new gasket and valve.
7. Reconnect vacuum hose.
