Transmission Control Systems: Adjustments

LINE PRESSURE

NOTE: This adjustment procedure can be used for both 1.8L and 1.9L vehicles. Refer to illustrations for proper throttle cable and bracket configurations.

1. If necessary, install ends of throttle cable to transaxle and throttle cam.
2. If necessary, install throttle cable bracket to intake plenum bracket.

Throttle Cable And Cam:

3. Tighten bolt "1" to 61 - 87 in lb ( 7 - 10 Nm).
4. Remove splash shield next to left front tire.

Pressure Gauge Hook-Up:

5. Remove square head plug (marked "L"). Install transmission test adapter D87C-77000-A and pressure gauge T57L-77820-A or equivalents.
6. Warm up engine and run at idle.
7. Adjust throttle cable until line pressure reaches specification:

1.8L Engine: 57 - 60 psi (393 - 413 kPa)
1.9L Engine: 71 - 74 psi (490 - 510 kPa)

Throttle Cable Adjustment:

8. Loosely tighten bolt "2."
9. Turn off engine and verify that throttle cable moves smoothly.
10. Restart engine and press accelerator slightly, then run engine at idle.
11. Verify that line pressure is within specification:

1.8L Engine: 51 - 64 psi (352 - 441 kPa)
1.9L Engine: 65 - 78 psi (448 - 537 kPa)

If pressure is not within specification, repeat procedure beginning with step 7.

12. After pressure is within specification, tighten bolt "2" to 61 - 87 in lb (7 - 10 Nm).
13. Turn off engine.
14. Install new square head oil passage plug and tighten to 43 - 87 in lb (5 - 10 Nm).
