PASSIVE RESTRAINT - INCORRECT INFORMATION CONTAINED IN WORKSHOP MANUAL AND EVTM - SERVICE TIP

MERCURY: 1991-1996 TRACER

ISSUE

The passive restraint system service information listed in the 1991-1996 Escort/Tracer Service or Workshop Manual and the Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM) has been revised to provide more comprehensive diagnostic capability.

ACTION

Please refer to the following Figures (1-32) for updated pinpoint diagnostic tests, wiring schematics, and connector views. This article should be used in place of current 1991-1996 Escort/Tracer passive restraint system information (Service Manual, Workshop Manual, and EVTM).

INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION - PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM

1. Manually operate the passive restraint system as follows:

^ Disconnect battery negative cable.

^ Remove passive restraint motor access cover in B-pillar.




^ Install 5 mm Allen wrench through access hole and manually move shoulder belt(s) from A-pillar to B-pillar. Refer to following illustration.

^ If belt moves manually from front to rear, go to Symptom Chart.

^ If belt does not move manually from front to rear, replace track and cable/motor assemblies

^ Reconnect battery negative cable.




2. Visually inspect the components of the system.

3. If both front seat belt shoulder strap carrier will not return to the front body pillar, verify that the inertia fuel shutoff switch has not been tripped.

4. Check the wiring harness and connectors for signs of obvious damage.

5. If the problem is not visually evident, determine the symptom observed and proceed to the Symptom Chart.
