ISSUE:
Poor engine performance, hard starting, rough idle, hesitation and/or stumble on acceleration may be caused by loose clamps or a cracked inlet air intake tube. The inlet air tube directs air from the vane air flow meter to the throttle body.
ACTION:
Inspect the inlet air tube and, if necessary, replace it. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Check the air intake system. Refer to the 1991 Engine/Emissions-Diagnosis Manual, Section 4. Use the diagnostic routines for the symptom that describes the driveability concern.
2. Before performing EEC tests, refer to Section 12 on "Inlet Air Systems". Visually inspect the inlet air tube(s) for loose clamps, poor fit or cracking.
NOTE:
THE 2.2L TURBO ENGINE USES ADDITIONAL INLET AIR TUBES BETWEEN THE INTERCOOLER AND THE THROTTLE BODY.
3. Remove the air inlet tube and inspect for cracks.
NOTE:
AIR INLET TUBES MUST BE INSPECTED CAREFULLY. THE CRACKS ARE TYPICALLY FOUND ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TUBE, BETWEEN THE RIBS.
4. Tighten any loose clamps and replace any worn or damaged inlet air tubes. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage.
5. Road test the vehicle to confirm that the performance concern has been resolved.
6. If the driveability concern was not resolved, and further diagnosis is required, refer back to Section 4 under "Diagnostic Routines" for appropriate action to take.
