ISSUE:
The front brakes may have a persistent "squeal" during braking at speeds below 56 km/h (35 mph). This may be caused by vibration between the semi-metallic pads and the brake rotor.

NOTE:
WHILE INTERMITTENT BRAKE NOISES ARE NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY, AN IMPROVED BRAKE PAD KIT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR 1997 ESCORT/TRACER. THIS KIT MAY INCREASE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION ON EARLIER MODELS. THIS TSB ARTICLE AUTHORIZES USE OF THE NEW COMPONENT ON EARLIER MODELS.

ACTION:
Replace the front brake pads and shims with new pads and shims and apply Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound to the shims. The Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and new shims will serve as a dampening device to reduce the possibility of squealing. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify the squealing noise occurs during braking at speeds below 56 km/h (35 mph).

2. Remove the front brake pads as outlined in the appropriate Escort/Tracer Service Manual.

3. Apply Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A, or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A) to both sides of the rubber coated/perforated shim as shown in Figure 1.

4. Install the new inboard pads and shims. Refer to Figure 1.

5. Complete the installation as outlined in the appropriate Escort/Tracer Service Manual.
