AIR CONDITIONING - INSUFFICIENT COOLING - RADIATOR/CONDENSER INTERFERENCE AND WEAR - THROUGH CONDENSER FAILURE - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 3/1/92

FORD: 1991-92 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991-92 TRACER

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to specify vehicles built before 3/1/92.

ISSUE:
Insufficient cooling may occur because of a damaged A/C condenser. The A/C condenser may come in contact with the radiator header, near the top of the condenser, on the passenger side of the vehicle. This can eventually lead to a wear-through/condenser failure.

ACTION:
Bend the front "leg" of the radiator support to its design position. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Condenser/radiator contact can occur when the upper radiator support (an inverted U section) is bent out of its design position. The condenser upper mounting bracket is attached to the front "leg" of the inverted U section, which is designed to be perfectly vertical in vehicle orientation.

1. Inspect the vehicle for proper condenser position by looking down between the condenser and radiator. The rear face of the condenser should be in line with the edge/"leg" of the upper radiator support.

2. If the condenser rear face is rearward of the radiator support, gently bend the front "leg" of the radiator support forward at the condenser mounting location.
