SPARK KNOCK - 1.9L SEFI - REMOVAL OF OCTANE ADJUST SHORTING BAR
FORD:
1991-93 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-93 TRACER
ISSUE:
Spark knock may occur on acceleration or during cruise because of ignition timing.
ACTION:
Retard the ignition timing 3-4° BTDC by removing the Octane Adjust Shorting Bar.
During normal diagnosis of the spark knock concern, if you are sent to Section 6A, Pinpoint Test Steps KP8 and KP9 of the Engine/Emissions Diagnosis or Powertrain Control Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual, removal of the Octane Adjust Shorting Bar is authorized. Removal of the Octane Adjust Shorting Bar will retard the ignition timing 3-4°. This is the only mechanical means for adjusting ignition timing on the EDIS equipped 1.9L SEFI engine.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
