FORD: 1991-92 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991-92 TRACER


ISSUE: A scraping noise may be heard coming from the steering wheel and column when turning. This occurs because the back of the steering wheel contacts the steering column shroud. The steering effort and function are not affected.

ACTION: Reposition the steering column shroud by using the following service procedure.


1. Remove the steering column shroud. Remove the one (1) gold screw and three (3) black screws retaining the lower cover. Refer to the 1992 Escort/Tracer Service Manual, Section 11-05, for removal procedure.

2. As appropriate, rework the bottom half of the shroud by removing the circular boss as shown in Figure 1.

^ Vehicles built after 11/1/91 do not require rework and will not have the gold screw securing the shroud.

^ Vehicles built before 11/1/91 may require the shroud rework and there may or may not be a gold screw securing the shroud. The gold screw removed from this hole will not be used to resecure the shroud.

3. Snap the shroud back onto the steering column and secure the screw that holds the two halves of the shroud together.


4. Do not reinstall the gold screw used in the hole that was modified in Step 2. Do install the two remaining screws in the two holes closest to the steering wheel.

NOTE: AFTER STARTING THESE TWO SCREWS, BE SURE TO PUSH THE SHROUD AS FAR AWAY FROM THE STEERING WHEEL AS POSSIBLE, THEN SECURE THE SCREWS.

5. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder to lock the column. Force the wheel right or left to align the lock cylinder to the hole in the shroud, Figure 2.
