SUBJECT:
Safety Recall 92S50 - Recall of certain 1992 Escort and Tracer Passenger Cars For Inspection and, if Necessary, Replacement of the Stop Lamp Switch

AFFECTED VEHICLES

REASONS FOR RECALL

The subject vehicles may have been produced with a stop lamp switch that could malfunction intermittently.

A driver following a car without stop lamps may not have adequate warning of braking. Consequently, a collision could result.

On a car equipped with optional speed control, the stop lamp switch also disengages the speed control when the brake pedal is pushed. However, if the stop lamp switch malfunctions while the vehicle is being driven with the speed control engaged, the speed control may be disengaged by:

- Pressing the brake pedal to activate a back-up shut-off system, or

- Pressing the clutch pedal if a manual transmission, or

- Pressing the "OFF" button on the Speed Control.

There is no loss of braking capability.

To correct this condition, the stop lamp switch will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.
