Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

WARNING: DO NOT smoke or carry an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. DO NOT work on any fuel related components when the engine is hot. DO NOT allow excess fuel from the fuel filter or lines to contact any engine or exhaust components. This may cause the fuel to be ignited, resulting in fire and personal injury.

IN-LINE FUEL FILTER

Removal

1. Depressurize the fuel system.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Position a suitable container below filter to collect fuel that may leak from filter or lines.

In-Line Fuel Filter:






4. Remove clamp and outlet line from top of filter. Plug outlet line.
5. Remove clamp and supply line from bottom of filter. Plug supply line.
6. Remove fuel filter from mounting clamp.

Installation

1. Position new filter and tighten mounting clamp.
2. Connect lower supply line.
3. Install hose retaining clamp.
4. Connect upper filter hose.
5. Connect negative battery cable.
6. START and RUN engine. Verify that fuel system does NOT leak.

IN-TANK FUEL FILTER

Removal

1. Depressurize fuel system.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

Fuel Pump:






3. Remove fuel tank sending unit/pump.
4. Remove sock-type filter from fuel pump assembly.

CAUTION: If filter is to be reused, be careful not to tear or damage it. To remove, grasp filter attaching ring at top and wiggle while pulling.

Installation

1. Install new filter on pump assembly.
2. Install fuel pump/sending unit in fuel tank.
3. Install rear seat cushion.
4. Connect negative battery cable.
5. START and RUN the engine. Verify that fuel system does NOT leak.
