CONVERTIBLE TOP - ROOF BOW VINYL FLAP DETACHED
FROM TOP

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991 and after CAPRI

ISSUE:
The roof bow vinyl flap may detach from the convertible top material because of poor adhesive bonding.

ACTION:
Repair of the vinyl flap may be performed by rebonding the vinyl flap to the convertible top. Refer to the following service procedures for repair details.





1. With the convertible top in the raised position, remove the interior trim cover from the affected bow. Refer to Figure 1.





2. Carefully insert a spacer (10-20 mm diameter rod) between the roof bow and convertible top material to obtain enough working clearance for the application of repair adhesive. Refer to Figure 2.

3. Clean the roof bow flap and the attaching area on the roof with 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (3M Part No. 051135-08984) and allow to dry.

4. Apply 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (3M Part No. 051135-08008) to the face of the roof bow flap over the area and on the roof where the adhesive was applied to the original manufacturing bonding process.

CAUTION:
ONCE THE TWO SURFACES HAVE ADHESIVE ON THEM, DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO CONTACT EACH OTHER. ALLOW THE TWO SURFACES TO DRY.

a. When the adhesive is dry. apply a second light coat of adhesive to one of the surfaces.

b. Remove the support spacer and join the roof bow flap to the convertible top material.

c. Hold for 60 seconds.

5. Install the interior trim cover to the roof bow.

NOTE:
THIS 3M SUPER WEATHERSTRIP ADHESIVE SHOULD ALSO BE USED WHEN RESECURING ANY TOP MATERIAL TO THE BOWS OR REPLACING THE COMPLETE TOP MATERIAL.
