Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Electronic

PURPOSE
The Electronic Instrument Cluster consists of one microcomputer-based electronic module that receives and processes all the sensor information to operate the gauges display, the Speedometer/Odometer/Tachometer display, and the Fuel Computer display. It also includes ISO indicators for turn, anti-theft (optional), check engine, brake, high beam, seat belt, anti-lock brakes (optional) and door ajar.

OPERATION
The four cluster control buttons are located immediately to the right of the Instrument Cluster. The cluster receives a 9000 ohm (maximum) resistance signal from circuit 704 without pressing a cluster control button, to as low as 150 ohm when a button is pressed. The cluster sends a ground level output signal on circuit 183 (tone out) to the Warning Chime Module when a cluster control button is pressed.

Engine Coolant Temperature
As the coolant temperature changes, the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor senses the change and sends a signal to a nine-segments that light up increase or decrease according to changes in temperature.

Fuel Level
When the fuel level changes, the Fuel Gauge Sender's resistance range changes (approximately 22 ohms at empty and 160 ohms at full). A nine-segment bar graph gauge reads the sender resistance to determine how may segment bars will light up.

Digital Speedometer
The speedometer displays vehicle speeds from 0 to 120 mph or 199 km/h vehicle speeds exceeding the maximum limits show up as maximum indications on the speedometer. Vehicle speed is displayed with the vehicle moving forward or backward. To select mph or km/kkm/h press the E/M button located on the Message Center.

Electronic Odometer
The odometer displays the amount of accumulated miles or kilometers and is capable of displaying from "000000.0" to "399999.9." When 399999.9 is exceeded, the display rolls over to 300000.0. The mileage is stored in a non-volatile memory, which retains the memory even if the battery is disconnected.

Warning, Messages and ISO Indicators
The following Warnings, messages and ISO Indicators are controlled by their respective switches and modules. The Instrument Cluster acts only as a display and intermittent signal filter.
^ Alternator Warning
^ Brake Pressure and Park Brake
^ Seat Belt
^ Check Engine
^ Alarm
^ Charge
^ Oil Pressure
^ High Beam
^ Right Turn Signal
^ Left Turn Signal
^ Low Oil Level
^ Door Ajar

Cluster Prove Out
All of the cluster LCD segments will light up momentarily when the Ignition Switch is turned from off to run. This is to identify inoperative cluster displays.

Diagnostic Bars
Diagnostic bars are displayed on a gauge when only the top and bottom two bars appear on the gauge. This may indicate a trouble signal or sender.
